Types of Motion

Motion Motion describes how objects move or change position There are four different types of motion: rotary, linear, reciprocating, and oscillating

Rotary Motion Rotary motion means turning around an axis or centre point The most common form of rotary motion would be the wheel Other examples include gears, pulleys, Can you think of any others?

Linear Motion Linear motion means movement in a single direction at one time such as up or down Some examples of linear motion include forklifts and bulldozers Can you think of any others?

Reciprocating Motion Reciprocating Motion refers to continuous, alternating, back and forth or up and down movement An example of reciprocating motion is a jackhammer Can you think of any others?

Oscillating Motion Oscillating motion refers to moving back and forth like a pendulum (a swinging motion) An example of oscillating motion is the bucket on a backhoe. It swings back and forth while working A backhoe is also an example of linear motion because it moves up and down Can you think of any more examples?
