Regents Physics Chapters 17/18 Circuits  Series Circuits

The Series Circuit Summary 1. The sum of the potential drops equals the potential rise of the source. 2. The current is the same everywhere in the series circuit 3. The total resistance of the circuit (also called effective resistance) is equal to the sum of the individual resistances click

Series Circuit and Ohm’s Law

How it looks on your Reference Tables What do these formulas tell us?

Example of a Series Circuit R 1 = 2 ohms R 2 = 3 ohms R 3 = 1 ohm V B = 12 V I = 2.0 A Find Voltage drop at each resistor

How Do We draw Circuits? A series circuit contains  (1) 9 V cell and 5  (1) resistor.  A voltmeter measures the voltage drop across the resistor.  An ammeter measures the current flowing in the circuit. 1)Draw the Circuit 2)Calculate the current in the circuit 3)What is the voltage drop across the resistor?

Series Circuits problem #2 A series circuit contains a 12 V battery with 5  and 3  resistors in series.  Draw the circuit  What is the voltage drop across the resistors?  What is the current flowing in the circuit?
