Presentation transcript:

What is metamorphic rock? Heat and pressure deep beneath the earth’s surface can change any rock into a metamorphic rock. Geologists classify metamorphic rocks according to the arrangements of the grains that make up the rocks. EX: (your experience, new question, or WU answered.) This is a very nice picture of Gneiss! What two things make metamorphic rock? How much heat compare to igneous rock? How much pressure compared to sedimentary rock? 1

What is foliated rock? Foliated Rocks: rocks that have their grains arranged in parallel layers or bands (Ex: slate, schist, gneiss) EX: (your experience, new question, or WU answered.) Be careful how you say schist! People may be impressed – you’re swearing in “geology!”

What is nonfoliated rock? Nonfoliated Rocks: rocks in which the mineral grains are arranged randomly – there are NO layers (Ex: marble, quartzite) EX: (your experience, new question, or WU answered.)

What is metamorphic rock used for? building and sculpture Taj Mahal Year of Construction: 1631 Completed In: 1653 Time Taken: 22 years Built By: Shah Jahan Dedicated to: Mumtaz Mahal (Arjumand Bano Begum), the wife of Shah Jahan Location: Agra (Uttar Pradesh) Building Type: Islamic tomb Architecture: Islamic Cost of Construction: 32 crore rupees Number of workers: 20,000 Highlights: One of the Seven Wonders of the World Before his accession to the throne, Shah Jahan was popularly known as Prince Khurram.
