On April 28, a new Preprocessor and 1b format was implemented –Code Modified to Incorporate New MHS Code Field of View (FOV) size change for HIRS HIRS calibration and format changed AMSU-A calibration and format changed AVHRR format changed Other 1b/1b* format changes NOAA-N Changes

MHS/MIU Issues –MHS and AMSU-B Differences Channels Frequency are Similar –Channels with different frequency »H2 and 17 »H5 and 20 Number of warm target PRTs –MHS has 5 –AMSU-B has 7 Different Algorithms for Calibration 1b/1b* format similar NOAA-N Changes

MHS/MIU Issues –Understanding different modes Nominal modes Non-nominal modes MIU nominal modes MIU non-nominal modes –Accommodating different modes Set flag for Nominal and Non- Nominal modes –Operational nominal modes 99% of time NOAA-N Changes

HIRS Issues –Field of View Size Change for HIRS HIRS/4 10KM FOV compared to HIRS/3 20KM FOV –Users may need to change software, especially where co-location with other sensors such as AVHRR –Patch Temperature changed from 100 to 95K –Added a 5 th Internal Warm Target temperature sensor and third telescope temperature sensor –Added extra bit to the electronic serial number in the Digital A data stream Element 63 Bits Software change Bits redefined in 1b NOAA-N Changes

HIRS Issues (Cont.) –Software Correction for the Operational HIRS Lunar Intrusion detection –HIRS Calibration Algorithm Version 4.0 New algorithm introduced to replacement old operational HIRS calibration algorithm NOAA-N Changes

AMSU-A Issues –Correction of Lunar contamination Required minor change to 1b format –Header and Data record Plan to move detection to Earth location Software –Correction for sudden jumps in the calibration counts (NOAA-17 Channel 3 anomaly) Required minor change to 1b format –Header and Data record NOAA-N Changes

AVHRR Issues –Change to AVHRR Scaling Factors for some of the AVHRR nonlinear radiance coefficients –IR Operational/Test Cal Channel 4 coefficient 3 –IR Operational/Test Cal channel 5 Coefficient 3 NOAA-N Changes

New Telemetry File –File contains telemetry that is not contained in instrument 1b Will be useful for MIU data when in Non- nominal modes All telemetry data will now be archived –File uses AIP 1a file format NOAA-N Changes

Incorporation of CLAVR-X flags to AVHRR 1bs –Prototype and timing tests complete Additional Preprocessor Enhancement

On April 28, Moved Preprocessing System from Amdahl Enterprise Server to IBM p655 (AIX Distributed Scalable Power processor(SP)) –Improved Processing Speed –Reduced Processing Cost New Data Processing Platform

Reason for change –Current Front End Processor (FEP) is out dated –Need to Allow Ingest of Metop CCSDS data (Phase 2) Acceptance testing with user community was suspended due to interface problems encountered with Satellite Operations Control Center(SOCC) systems Internal testing and system modifications are underway Will resume testing with user community once modifications and internal testing are completed Plan to transition to AFEP soon after Advanced Front End Processor (AFEP) Implementation (Phase 1)

IPD will move to new NOAA Satellite Operations Facility (NSOF) –Scheduled to begin moving equipment August time frame –Scheduled to begin moving staff October time frame –Plan to complete transition by January –No interruption to service planned Move to New Facility

Blind Orbit Support for KLM series –OSD is investigating avenues for obtaining blind orbits for KLM series of satellites Schemes for Improved Data Timeliness
