Writing is a Process Nobody can write successfully without some preparation. Today we are going to carry out a sequence of actions which lead you towards effective writing.

Follow the Sequence for Effective Writing 1. Understand the aim. 2. Read some examples. 3. Explore the features of the text. 4. Define the conventions. 5. See how an experienced writer does it. 6. Compose together. 7. Use a framework. 8. Independent writing – you can do it!

1. Understand the aim. Today the genre we are going to write in is: a thank-you note. (Grammatical note: ‘thank-you’ is a noun and adjective. ‘Thank you’ is the verb: the act of thanking. However; English is fluid and moving towards, ‘thank you’, for all forms.)

Think of someone to thank Everyone has someone to be thankful for. Think who and why. c

2. Read some examples.

3. Explore the features of the text. 1.Starting your Thank-You Note You start with a salutation of some kind. 2.Thank them specifically Start your note by saying thank you, and give the reason why. 3.End the thank- you note with a forward-looking message 4.Use an appropriate sign-off Use positive language and the language of gratitude. E.g. ‘so much’, ‘very kind’, ‘hope’, ‘lovely’. Appreciate Value Welcome Grateful Pleased

4. Define the conventions. A Thank-You note is an informal, expression of gratitude. Structure: Salutation The act of thanks Why Forward thinking message Sign off Language: Positive, thankful, polite. Usually handwritten.

Points to Keep in Mind Who are you writing to? What is your relationship? What kind of tone do you want to convey? Is your writing clear and concise? Check for errors.

5. See how an experienced writer does it. 6. Compose together. Dear 11 A, Thank you for being such a wonderful tutor group. We have met together every school morning for the last four years and you have made each occasion a pleasure. I feel most fortunate to be your tutor. I am sure that you will continue to be caring, kind and responsible people. Thank you Ms Richardson

7. Use a framework. Dear_______ Thank you for… (Reason) (More Detail) I hope… (Sign off)
