In order to have rhyme scheme, what does not have to be true about a poem? a. It must contain rhyme b. That rhyme must be consistent c. It must either follow an AB, AB pattern or an AA, BB pattern d. The entire poem must contain the rhyme

Most Important Points to Remember: 1. In poetry, the MOOD, or atmosphere, is the feeling that a poem creates in a reader. Examples: imaginative, frightening, reflective, or lonely. 2. In poetry, the THEME is the central message, concern, or purpose of the poem. Examples: “Be careful what you wish for,” or “Hard work always pays off.” 3. In poetry, the TONE is the speaker’s attitude towards a subject. Examples: annoyed, amused, loving, scared

Unfortunately, unlike math, there is no exact formula or measurement that gives you to the MOOD of the poem. Poetry is something you have to feel out. Here are some things to help you, the reader, identify (ID) the mood of a poem.  Diction  Sound Devices  Imagery  Setting

DICTION Diction refers to the language of a poem, and how each word is chosen to create a specific meaning. Poets are very deliberate in choosing each word for its particular effect, so it's important to know the feelings the word arouses. The diction of a poem can help the reader figure out the tone, mood, and theme of a poem. AKA: WORD CHOICE SURPRISE MINI-LESSON!

Negative Hungry Warm Happy Frightened Imaginative Reflective Lonely Excited Gloomy Peaceful Calm Inspired Regretful Hopeful The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, and I bought a big chocolate ice cream cone as I walked through the park.

When you wish upon a star, It makes no difference who you are. Anything your heart desires Will come to you. If your heart is in your dreams No request is too extreme When you wish upon a star As dreamers do. Negative Hungry Warm Happy Frightened Imaginative Reflective Lonely Excited Gloomy Peaceful Calm Inspired Regretful Hopeful On your own!

Just like finding the mood requires a lot of abstract thinking, or “feeling it out,” there is no exact formula or measurement that gives you to the TONE of the poem. Here are some things to help you, the reader, identify (ID) the tone of a poem.  Diction  Sound Devices  Point of View  Setting/Context

Angry Annoyed Cheery Amused Furious Relieved Disgusted Arrogant Irritated Obnoxious Enamored Sarcastic Proud Scared Teasing Standing tall, a smile wreathing her face, she watched, misty-eyed, as her youngest son received his diploma. _______________________________________________________ + (Diction) _________________________ + _____________________ (Point of View) (Sound Devices) + _______________________________ = ______________________ (Situation/Context/Setting) (Tone)

Standing tall, a smile wreathing her face, she watched, misty-eyed, as her youngest son received his diploma. The tone, or attitude in this poem is ______________. I believe _____________ is the tone of this poem because the poet uses diction such as _______________________ ________________________________________________, which arouse feelings of ______________ in me, the reader. Also, I know that the context of this poem is probably _______________________________________ which also makes me interpret the tone as _____________________ because a mother would be ___________ in this context.

Anything your heart desires Will come to you. If your heart is in your dreams No request is too extreme When you wish upon a star As dreamers do. The tone, or attitude in this poem is ____________. I believe _____________ is the tone of this poem because the poet uses diction such as _________ _______________________ _______________________ _______________________, which arouse feelings of ______________ in me, the reader. On your own!

Before you can identify the THEME of a poem, you must first identify the subject or topic of the poem, and then the main idea. The theme IS NOT the same as the main idea. The THEME is the author’s message to their reader about a topic.

When you wish upon a star, It makes no difference who you are. Anything your heart desires Will come to you. If your heart is in your dreams No request is too extreme When you wish upon a star As dreamers do. What is the theme? a)Stars are powerful objects. b)Dreams and stars are the same. c)No request is too extreme. d)Dreams can come true if you really want them to.

Thinking about what the author is saying about his father and himself, what is a possible theme? a) You should make your fires early in the morning b) You should be grateful for the love a parent gives you c) You shouldn’t let your hands get so dry they crack d) You should wait until it’s warm before you get dressed

WARM UP What is poetry? Use figurative language to describe what poetry is to you.
