Sub-Saharan Africa Preteach Region Nomenclature Fact or Crap

The Name: Sub-Saharan Africa Africa - Latin name: There was an ancient Roman province called Africa. Europeans later applied it to the whole continent. Sub-Saharan - south of the Sahara desert.

The Region North Africa’s distinct culture is closely related to the Middle East. For most of history, the Sahara was a barrier. Sub- Saharan Africa developed many unique cultures.

“Fact” 1 Africa is the second most populated continent on Earth. FACT: Africa has 1 billion people, 15% of everybody on Earth!

“Fact” 2 There are more countries in the Americas than in Africa. CRAP! There are 54 countries in Africa, the most of any continent. Both North and South America have only 36.

“Fact” 3 China, India, Europe, Argentina, New Zealand and the mainland of the United States can fit into the continent of Africa. FACT: Africa is the second- largest continent at over 11M square miles (30M square km)

“Fact” 4 The largest city in Sub-Saharan Africa is Lagos, Nigeria. FACT: Lagos has a population of 11.8M. If the whole of Africa is included, it is second to Cairo, at 15.2M

“Fact” 5 Sub-Saharan Africa is united by a common African language, Swahili. CRAP Thousands of living African languages are spoken across the continent. Many European languages like French, English, and Portuguese are also widely spoken.
