Underwater Turbines! Tidal energy utilizes the flow and energy of the tides and currents to generate electricity. The water turns the turbines, which charges the generator and sends electricity through the cables to the shore.

How does Barrage energy produce electricity? Tidal energy utilizes the flow and energy of the tides and currents to generate electricity. Barrage tidal energy involves building a barrage or dam across a bay or an estuary, to force tidal water through turbines situated in the barrage. First the water flows through at high tide. Then the dam closes once the water has gone through, and the water sets to low tide. And last, the water on the other side is let open for the water to return out to produce electricity. Advantages! Does not depend on the season or weather type. Very reliable source of energy due to its predictability. Produces no green house gases or other wastes. Not expensive to maintain, after beginning cost is paid. Renewable source of energy Reduces dependence upon fossil fuels.

Disadvantages! Very expensive to construct, and affects a very wide area. Can only provide power for about 10 hours each day. Only available in certain locations. It requires a gulf that has a mean tidal amplitude of 7meters or above. Wildlife such as birds, can be damaged because they live off the flow of the water, and barrage’s across rivers can change that. Ecosystem is disrupted while building the plant. Affects fishes and the fishermen.

What causes tides? Tides are created because the Earth and the moon are attracted to each other. The moon tries to pull at anything on the Earth to bring it closer. But, the Earth is unable to hold onto water because it is constantly moving, so the moon’s pull creates high and low tides. Tides are the periodic rise and falling of large bodies of water. Winds and currents move the surface water causing waves. The gravitational attraction of the moon causes the oceans to bulge out in the direction of the moon. Another bulge occurs on the opposite side, since the Earth is also being pulled toward the moon (and away from the water on the far side). Ocean levels change daily as the sun, moon and earth interact. As the moon travels around the earth and as they, together, travel around the sun, the combined gravitational forces cause the world's oceans to rise and fall.

The bay of Fundy! Facts! The image that is said to keep in mind when thinking about the Bay of Fundy is a large bath tube! The water may rise and fall as much as 50 feet each day. The Bay of Fundy is 170 miles long, and is shaped as a U.. The tides at the bay of Fundy are the highest in the world! The tides at the bay of Fundy are said to be at least 5 times higher than the ones on the Atlantic coast! The Bay of Fundy is already home to one tidal power plant, the Annapolis Tidal Generating Station.
