“You’re Hired!” Tools for Successfully Finding and Landing a Job

Generational Overview  Traditionalists (born before 1945) Work Style: Traditional  Respect for authority absolute  Delayed rewards  Baby Boomers (born ) Work Style: Relational  People, team & relationship oriented

Generational Overview Cont.  Generation X (born ) Work Style: Independent  “Do it ourselves” mentality  Millennials (born ) Work Style: Flexible  Immediate everything  Things and jobs are easily replaceable  Rules are optional  Interconnected

Bridging the Gap  Yesterday’s workplace: Traditionalist  Today’s workplace: Baby Boomer and X  Tomorrow’s workplace: Millennial The quest for lifetime employment has morphed into the quest for lifetime employability. Unlike your grandparents who often had the same job their entire lives, it is expected that you will have different jobs by the time you turn 38 years old. So what can you do to make sure you are “hire-able” throughout your life?

To get hired, Millennials need to… Act like the older generations as much as possible! (what generation is your BOSS?) Staying longer with one job (2+ yrs) is better than a having a little experience in lots of different jobs Loyalty Determination Humility Need to show self-motivation Do you work hard for yourself or because other people are telling you to? No excuses!

The Do’s and Don'ts of Job Searching for Millennials Don’t:  …use a “spicy” or humorous address for your job search  …have racy or illegal material on your Tumbler, Twitter or Facebook page  …have Mom or Dad or other family members call for you when you’re job searching – do it yourself  …take your friends with you to your interview (if someone is giving you a ride, ask them to wait in the car)  …use texting language when corresponding with potential employers or your supervisor

The Do’s and Don'ts of Job Searching for Millennials Do:  …have SEVERAL people proof read your resume, cover letter, etc before sending it to a potential employer  …present yourself professionally in any communication (cell phone message, etc.)  …remember to turn your cell phone off before going into an interview  …assume that every time you interact with a potential employer, you’re making an impression  …use the most professional and academic language possible – i.e. POWER WORDS

POWER WORDS!!! Example: You were a checker  communicated positively with clientele  recorded transactions  organized cash drawer, deposits, and receipts  familiarized clientele with specials

POWER WORDS!!! Example: You were a babysitter  Supervised 3 children, ages 2-5  Organized schedules  Planned nutritious meals  Counseled and guided  Initiated with household chores

POWER WORDS!!! Example: You mowed lawns  Planned and scheduled appointments  Maintained lawn care  Communicated positively with customers

POWER WORDS!!! Example: You worked at McDonalds  Communicated effectively with clientele  Ensured customer satisfaction  Organized orders  Maintained a clean and safe working environment

POWER WORDS!!! Example: You worked in retail  Organized merchandise for display  Recorded transactions  Ran a cash drawer  Familiarized clientele with specials  Assisted customers with sizing and purchases
