Defeating Your Giants 1 st Samuel 17:1-58

Insecurity – we all want to be secure Fear of people, death, the after-life, failure, success Health problems which cause suffering and misery Financial issues due to joblessness, poor choices, a catastrophe, or security in retirement Reputation from our past or present Temptation and its consequences Lying to and deceiving others Relational problems – at work, home, friends Unhealthy pride, ego and envy that drive a person to being self-centered and selfish

Face Your Giant Decisively. Vs. 26b “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?” (v.32) “Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.”

Avoidance, denial and delay do not eliminate the giant; they only allow the Giant to get bigger and prevent us from addressing the threat. Delay can even bring more giants into your life and make it even harder to defeat.

Face Your Giant CONFIDENTLY v.33 “You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a boy, and he has been fighting man from his youth.”

v “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of the Philistine.”

Psalm 46:1 ”God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

Face Your Giant WISELY vss

Psalm 119:11 - I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

Psalm 119:105 - Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.

Hebrews 12:1 - Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

Face Your Giant UNRELENTINGLY vs “Am I a dog that you come against me with sticks? Come here, and I’ll give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field.”

You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord God Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will hand you over to me, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head.

Today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and the whole world will know there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves, for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you all into our hands.”

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Philippians 4:13 I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.

James 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
