Artists of the World By: Claire Gorski and Selina Rogers

Leonardo da Vinci Born in 1452, died in 1519 in Vinci, Italy He taught himself to paint with both hands. He was fascinated with lights and shadowing and liked to make his people 3-dimensional. He was the first one to use linear perspective. Painting is called “ Virgin of the Rocks”

Michelangelo Born in 1475, died in 1564 in Italy. He had 3 specialties: sculpting, painting and architecture. Before he became famous, he was an apprentice. He wanted to make the perfect human body in his art. The Painting is called “The Pieta”

Claude Monet Born in 1840, died in 1926 in Paris, France. He helped invent impressionism. He was inspired by the reflections off the water. He was first a drawer, but became a painter. Painting is called “Impression Sunrise”

Vincent van Gogh Born in 1853, died in 1890 in the Netherlands or Holland. He had a disease called psychosis. He spoke 4 languages. He is fascinated by light and lines. Painting is called “Starry, Starry, Night”

Pablo Picasso Born on October 25 th 1886, died in 1973 in Barcelona, Spain. He was very sexually driven. His friend’s death started Picasso’s “blue period”. He tries to show someone from all points of view in his paintings. Painting is called “The Tragedy, 1903”

“The Great Wave of Kanagawa” Painted by Katsushika Hokusai In all of his paintings, Mt. Fuji is the center point. He was not allowed to paint like this by the emperor.

“The Scream” Painted by Edvard Munch Edvard is Norwegian. The Scream thought that the Earth was screaming at him after it split so he put his hands over his ears for protection.

“The Dance Class” Painted by Edgar Degas. He usually paints ballet dancers. The old man in the painting was the best ballet dancer in the 1800’s. He makes you see that there is more than what is just on the screen.

“Boating on the Seine” Painted by Pierre- Augustine Renior. It is an impressionist painting. The artist was fascinated with color. Where it came from and reflecting colors. It has very heavy brushstrokes. The farther you get from it, the clearer it gets.

“Girl with the Pearl Earring” Painted by Johannes Vermeer. The artist liked to paint pearls He never signed his name the same. He is good at making the pearls reflect.

Foreground, Middle Ground, and Background “Impression Sunrise” by Claude Monet. The foreground is the first boat The Middle Ground is the second boat. The background is the factories and the land in the background.

Portrait, Self Portrait “Self Portrait” by Claude Monet. This is a self portrait of himself because it is a painting of only him that he did by himself.

Seascape, Landscape, and Cityscape “Irises in Monet’s Garden” by Claude Monet. This is a landscape painting because there is nothing but landscape in the picture.

Still Life Slide “Sunflowers” by Claude Monet. This is a still life portrait because the flowers in the painting are no longer living.
