New York City The Culture Capital of the World

Information about NYC New York City has more than 300 square miles of land. It is home to more than 8 million people. New York City has five “boroughs” that people live in. They are: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. The city has had a great influence in today’s society and is considered to be one of the fashion and entertainment capitals of the world.

The History of NYC The first Europeans to arrive in New York were the Dutch. They claimed the land in 1624 and named it New Amsterdam, but it was later won over by the English and they named it after the Duke of York and Albany, hence calling it New York. Back then, the city was mostly known for its trading posts.

Immigration In the late 1800’s, New York was the gateway to America for many European immigrants seeking a better life. Millions of people would pour into the city, first stopping at Ellis Island to seek citizenship.

The Statue of Liberty In 1886, the French gifted the Statue of Liberty to the U.S. as a sign of peace and friendship. It took two years to fully complete the project. The statue soon became a beacon of hope and freedom to all immigrants.

The City’s Sites Each year, millions of people come from all over the world to see the many sites this city has to offer. Some of these attractions include the Empire State Building, Times Square, Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, and the famous Broadway Theater.

The Events of 9/11 On September 11 th, 2001, a series of terrorist attacks hit the United States. One attack in particular hit the World Trade Center in Manhattan. Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in result of the attack. This day forever changed America and New York City.

A Changed City On History.com it states, “New York City has come a long way from its origins as the humble 17th-century Dutch trading post of New Amsterdam.” Looking back, New York City has changed tremendously in the past years. Today, it stands as a huge influence on the rest of the world. New York City has definitely achieved many great things in the past and will continue to be legendary in the years to come.
