INCOMMUNICABLE ATTRIBUTES Chad Kincer

Five Incommunicable Attributes of God God’s independence (self-existence or aseity) God’s unchangeableness (or immutability) God’s eternity (or timelessness) God’s omnipresence God’s unity (or simplicity)

God’s Independence God does not need us or the rest of creation for anything, yet we and the rest of creation can glorify him and bring him joy.

Discussion What are some areas of your life where you fail the doctrine of God’s independence? Where do you continually seek to have a reliance and a sufficiency in yourself rather than on God? How can you begin to live more regularly with a reliance upon an all-sufficient God?

God’s Unchangeableness God is unchanging in his being, perfections, purposes, and promises, yet God does act and feel emotions, and he acts and feels differently in response to different situations.

God’s Eternity God has no beginning, end, or succession of moments in his own being, and he sees all time equally vividly, yet God sees events in time and acts in time.

Discussion What are some ways that we can at times doubt this unchangeableness of God? How can a rock solid confidence in God’s immutability help us fight sin? How can believing in the timelessness of God be a weapon for fighting anxiety and a comfort in the midst of suffering?

God’s Omnipresence God does not have size or spatial dimensions and is present at every point of space with his whole being, yet God acts differently in different places. (If God’s eternity is infinity applied to time, then God’s omnipresence is infinity applied to space)

God’s Unity God is not divided into parts, yet we see different attributes of God emphasized at different times.

Discussion Does God’s omnipresence make a difference in our lives in our practical day to day? How can it play more of a part?
