Objectives Students will be able to meet the second-grade performance objectives as stated in the Social Studies Ohio’s Model Competency-Based Program Students will be able to use the internet to achieve the performance objectives.

American Heritage Websites Declaration of Independence After reading about and viewing images of the Declaration of Independence, students will create a timeline of what they consider the most important information they read. Native Americans Students will view sites and maps of the Mississippian Civilization; after they are finished they will complete a group project researching Ohio’s Serpent Mound.

American Heritage Websites White House Tour After students take a virtual tour of the White House, they will choose a room and write about things they learned during the tour. The History Place - This Month in History Students will click on the current month and pick three topics to discuss with their classmates. The Civil War Students will browse through this site, and then will click on the Fix our Museum box. They will complete this activity in small groups.

People in Societies Myths and Legends Students will choose one of the stories at the site to read and summarize. Students will research the country that the story originated from, and share the information with the class. Kids Genealogy Page Students will use the information on this page to research their family history. They will then share the information on their heritage with the class.

People in Societies Human Languages Page Students will use their genealogy information and research countries that are part of their heritage. United States Maps Students will compare and contrast one of the historic maps with a current map of the same area. Holiday Observances Students will choose any holiday (traditionally American or not) and read about how it is celebrated in a country other than the United States.

World Interactions European Union Students will view a map of the European Union. They will then choose a flag and determine which country the flag represents. Finally they will use classroom resources to find three facts about the country. USGS - Working with Maps This site includes a unit on mapping appropriate for grades K – 3. Pen Pals At this site our classroom will be able to communicate with a classroom from another country.

World Interactions Discovery Kids This site has numerous activities for children, including a mapping activity and information on how to find a pen pal. Map Information After learning about maps in class, students would be able to research this site to review material from the lecture. They could also find additional mapping information.

Decision Making and Resources Junior Achievement This site explains how to set up a junior achievement project in your elementary school. It gives descriptions of the projects broken down by grade level. The Goat in the Rug This site is a lesson plan centered around the story The Goat in the Rug. This lesson informs students about producers, resources, and intermediate goods.

Decision Making and Resources Family.com This site offers information on how families can teach their children the value of money. One activity this site suggests is to have children buy 3 boxes of similar cookies (one the leading national brand, one regional favorite brand, and the store brand). Perform a blind taste test, and then discuss the results. Fleet Kids This site has games for young children to play. Money is the main theme in the games.

Decision Making and Resources Detroit News Article This article discusses how a teacher in Detroit uses teaches money management to her elementary school students. After discussing this article with students we will begin to incorporate finances into our math and graphing lessons.

Democratic Processes Ohio House of Representatives After reading information about the Northwest Ordinance, students will get into small groups and discuss what they read. White House for Kids After viewing the website, students will compose a letter to either President Bill Clinton, First Lady Hillary Rodham-Clinton, Vice- President Al Gore, or Mrs. Tipper Gore

Democratic Processes Ohio Government Students will view this page, and will write about what they would change in Ohio if they were governor. America Rock - I'm Just a Bill Students will enjoy watching this schoolhouse rock video after learning about how a bill becomes a law. America Rock - Three-Ring Government This is another great schoolhouse rock video to show elementary students. It compares our three branches of government to a three ring circus.

Citizenship Rights and Responsibilities KVUSA: Students Only: Wish Tree Students will get in small groups and discuss what they would like to see changed in our country. After the groups have decided, they will go to this site and place their wish on the wish tree. List Of All 54 Ways This site includes a book of 54 ways to help the homeless, and it also includes the simple list of 54 things to do. Students will be able to earn extra-credit if they do one of the 54 things outside of class (with parent permission).

International Acts of Kindness Day Working in groups, students will decide one thing they will do to fulfill the goal of this site. Conclusion Computer skills are essential in preparing students for life in the 21 st Century. By integrating the Internet into the school curriculum, students will gain knowledge and skills that will benefit them as they progress through their school-years and beyond.
