Engineering Notebook Mrs. Smith Gateway to Technology -Foundations (GTT 1) -Advanced (GTT 2)

Why keep an engineering notebook? Engineers must keep records of the steps they take while developing a solution, the processes they use in creating the solution, and a record of their solutions. The Engineering Notebook is so important it can be considered a legal document! Is used in pursuit of a patent…

What do you put in your Engineering Notebook? Your thoughts, ideas Sketches, pictures documenting the process (* with labels, please!) Work session activities Research findings – with references! Interview information – with details: who, where, why, when, what was discussed

Each day… Create a journal entry that includes: Brief explanation of what was done in class –“today I researched…I wrote…I drew…I built…I tested…I found…” Important dates Importance of any performed experiments And, depending on the day: -Class notes -Define vocab -Answering conclusion questions

Let’s take a look at Engineering Notebook Standards… - Glue into your own notebook to remember these important standards

Examples…

Why are these excellent examples? Pages sequentially #ed Pages are bound in a notebook All figures and calculations have been clearly labeled Date is clearly identified Student included sketches Detailed explanations of how designs work Students gave evidence of research Problems encountered were documented and ideas to fix problems were clearly evident A technical drawing of a prototype is made, laebeled Digital photograph was included Any mistakes had a single line through them and were initialed

Not a good example… Loose paper No page number Not each day was represented No sketches, technical drawings, prototypes, etc No explanations – problems? How fixed? …
