NSTX Upgrade Progress Report May 7 th, 2013 Ron Strykowsky, Erik Perry, Tim Stevenson, Larry Dudek, Steve Langish, Tom Egebo, Mike Williams and the NSTXU Project Team

Significant progress continues to be made Excellent safety record On schedule and cost

Neutral beam installation ahead of schedule TIV valve installed on the front of the Neutral Beam 40 ton Neutral Beam move into the NSTX TC New vacuum vessel port installed Neutral Beam in final position Ready for connecting duct

All 3 High Voltage Enclosures (HVE’s) relocated to the NSTXU Test Cell ! Neutral beam installation continued

Center Stack Fabrication & Assembly Proceeding Well Cooling tube soldered into inner TF conductor (completed ) Conductor being wrapped with fiberglass insulation Insulated conductor being placed into mold Assembled TF mold ready for Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VPI) First 3 Quadrants successfully VPI’d ! Machined conductor by Major 100% + COMPLETE 86% + COMPLETE Cleaning mold for 4 th quadrant Next VPI planned first week June

Centerstack casing delivered Forms the inner part of the vacuum vessel and houses the inner TF/OH magnet. 500 Inconel studs will added to the outside surfaces. 696 Tiles with diagnostics will then be mounted.

Plans Forward for Centerstack Components Components & Hardware – Flex connectors delivered – PF 1b,a,c coils- Awarded. Delivery July, August, October – PFC Tiles-delivered and being machined – Casing delivered Inner TF Bundle – VPI first Quadrant- Completed – VPI Full Bundle- July 2013 OH Solenoid – OH Conductor delivered – Begin winding OH solenoid- September 2013 – OH Mold Award. Delivery August – VPI OH – December 2013 Centerstack Assembly- – Delivery to NSTX TC April 2014

New CS Installation one year away! Completed center-stack assembly installed in the vacuum vessel Planned for April 2014 Center Stack Pedestal Vacuum Vessel Legs Passive Plates Lower Umbrella structure Outer TF Coils (Red) PF Coils (blue)

Machine modifications making good progress Umbrella Legs and Arch Reinforcement TF Outer Leg Supports Umbrella/TF Reinforcements

Other Field work progressing well Davis-Bacon NB Services and Electrical work being bid Cable tray installations on the north wall and labyrinth underway. Fabrication and leak checking of NB LHe cryo lines underway. Installation of new gas injection ports underway Fabrication of NB/TVPS duct components underway. Re-installation of cable trays and racks underway 2 New Outer TF Coils being fabricated Conductor Mold

Project on Track for early October Completion (1) Critical path through the centerstack fabrication and installation Close to critical path: DCPS - Re- evaluating plans Coil Bus Runs- fabrication and field fit-up Machine- Structures, cable tray, terminations Key Operations Milestones Begin Diagnostic Installation – August 1st, 2013 Complete in-vessel construction work October 1 st Complete Diagnostic installation & calibration – December 1 st, 2013 Rough Pump down – January 1 st, 2014 Key Operations Milestones Begin Diagnostic Installation – August 1st, 2013 Complete in-vessel construction work October 1 st Complete Diagnostic installation & calibration – December 1 st, 2013 Rough Pump down – January 1 st, 2014 (1) Includes 5+ weeks for bakeout

NSTX TC Access Protocol General pre-requisites 1.Must have current Radiation Safety Training 2.Must have supplemental NSTX Radiation Safety Training (video) 3.Must have dosimetry (film badge) To access the NSTX Test Cell to look a short period: 1.Contact Joe Winston or Frank Jones to get a dedicated escort (subject to daily TC exclusions, i.e. lifts, welding) To access the NSTX Test Cell to measure, use tools, install or remove items: 1.Must have a procedure and an Engineering Work Package approved by the Work Control Center Don McBride can assist with the procedure preparation. Will require a pre-job brief. 2.Contact Joe Winston or Frank Jones to get someone to initially escort you in. (subject to daily TC exclusions, i.e. lifts, welding) 3.Consider attending the 8:00am WCC meeting in D-site WCC trailer before and during execution of the work.

Near Term Risks & Uncertainties SCHEDULE – 1.Center Stack Assembly Planning workshop conducted. Increased fabrication times offset with 2 shift operations. 2.Vendor deliveries (e.g. Outer TF coils, PF 1 coils, OH mold) 3.Funding uncertainties at PPPL and a potential reduction in force at the laboratory may indirectly impact the project schedule. TECHNICAL – 1.Centerstack VPI operations. First 3 VPI’s successful! 3 more to follow.

NSTX Upgrade Summary Project risks identified and being worked The project continues to make good technical progress. The project is currently on schedule and cost. Planning for start-up underway
