Hot and Cold deserts

What is a hot desert like? A desert is a dry habitat that gets very little rain. They are hot during the day and cool at night. The soil is sandy and rocky.

Plants that grow in a hot desert CactusesGrasses

Desert plants can store water in their stems and leaves.

Some have roots that spread out far or deep to find water when it rains.

Some leaves curl up during the day to hide from the sunlight

Animals living in hot deserts SnakeGila monster

Things that live in the desert need to survive without much water. Desert animals get most of their water from eating plants or other animals. Many animals have pale colors that help them stay cool and hide from other animals.

Most animals sleep during the day and come out at night when it’s cooler.

What is the Arctic desert like? The arctic desert is near the north pole. It is cold and dry

Arctic desert animals Arctic foxesPolar bears

Polar bears and foxes grow thick white fur to keep them warm and help them hide.
