The Vatican, Rome, Italy David ’ high marble. Florence, Italy Moses Approximately 8’high marble. San Pietro in Vincoli, Rome, Italy. Michelangelo was a prolific artist, with a celebrated Italian temper. It is said that he received a broken nose during his apprenticeship, resulting from an argument with his mentor. Italy was flourishing under the leadership of Lorenzo Medici, who began a rebirth of the arts called the Renaissance. Lorenzo was Michelangelo’s patron and allowed him to create. Another supporter of Michelangelo was Pope Julius II who commissioned Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel and also design his tomb.

Synopsis Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475, in Caprese, Italy. Born to a family of moderate means in the banking business, Michelangelo became an apprentice to a painter before studying in the sculpture gardens of the powerful Medici family. What followed was a remarkable career as an artist in the Italian Renaissance, recognized in his own time for his artistic virtuosity.
