Main Idea/Vocabulary Solve addition and subtraction equations.

What is an Algebraic Equation An algebraic equation has numbers, operations, variables, and ____________. Example: x – 5 = 11 We need to know how to solve them

How to solve Algebraic Equations I think of a teeter tot or a see saw…how many of you have used one of those items? The idea is to keep things balanced Also, since in an algebraic equation you know the end answer, you need to work backwards to find the missing piece, like a detective! We use inverse operations. These are operations that un-do each other. Addition and __________ are inverse operations. How to solve Algebraic Equations

Let’s re-examine some Algebra problems, this time focusing on the steps x + 5 = 11 x + 5 = 11 Step 1: Write down the problem Step 2:Draw the line through equal sign; Step 3: inverse operation x = 6 Step 4: Solve the problem (Inverse operation helps to isolate the variable)

Let’s re-examine some Algebra problems, this time focusing on the steps x - 11 = 3 x - 11 = 3 Step 1: Write down the problem Step 2:Draw the line through equal sign; Step 3: inverse operation x = 14 Step 4: Solve the problem (Inverse operation helps to isolate the variable)

Let’s re-examine some Algebra problems, this time focusing on the steps x - 5 = 1 x - 5 = 1 Step 1: Write down the problem Step 2:Draw the line through equal sign; Step 3: inverse operation x = 6 Step 4: Solve the problem (Inverse operation helps to isolate the variable)

Let’s solve some Algebra problems with the see saw x + 5 = 11 x + 5 = 11 Step 1: Write down the problem Step 2:Draw the line through equal sign;Step 3: inverse operation x = 6 Step 4: Solve the problem (Inverse operation helps to isolate the variable)

Let’s solve some Algebra problems with the see saw x - 2 = 5 x - 2 = 5 Step 1: Write down the problem Step 2:Draw the line through equal sign;Step 3: inverse operation x = 7 Step 4: Solve the problem (Inverse operation helps to isolate the variable)

Let’s solve some Algebra problems with the see saw x - 11 = 6 x - 11 = 6 Step 1: Write down the problem Step 2:Draw the line through equal sign;Step 3: inverse operation x = 17 Step 4: Solve the problem (Inverse operation helps to isolate the variable)
