Exploring Polygons. What are polygons? A polygon is a closed figure made by joining line segments, where each line segment intersects exactly two others.
Polygons Polygons Simple, Simple, Closed figure Closed figure Made up of line segments Made up of line segments.
Polygons Lesson What is a polygon? A polygon is a simple, closed, two-dimensional figure formed by three or more line segments (sides). Closed?

Warm-up 1.

NOTES - Polygons Polygons are classified by the number of sides it has: Pentagon – 5 Hexagon – 6 Heptagon – 7 Octagon – 8 Nonagon – 9 Decagon - 10 Regular Polygons: All sides congruent!

EXAMPLES - Polygons Determine whether the figure is a polygon. If it is, classify the polygon and state whether it is regular. NO YES, HEXAGON NOT REGULAR NO YES, PENTAGON, NOT REGULAR YES, SQUARE, REGULAR

Quadrilaterals TRAPEZOID PARALLELOGRAM RECTANGLE RHOMBUS SQUARE One pair of opposite parallel sides Parallelogram w/ four right angles Opposite sides parallel & congruent Parallelogram w/ 4 right angles and 4 congruent sides QUADRILATERAL Closed figure w/ four sides Parallelogram w/ four congruent sides Angles in a quadrilateral always add up to 360º.

EXAMPLES - Quadrilaterals Now, draw or print and glue a copy of the quadrilaterals chart from the previous slide into your composition book.
