Chapter 21: The Kennedy and Johnson Years Section 2: Kennedy’s New Frontier

Why It Matters Kennedy’s determination to change life at home resulted in his domestic agenda called the New Frontier. Faced with a conservative Congress, Kennedy met with opposition as he fought to turn his vision into a reality. Still, he had some success in making changes in Social Security benefits, dealing with poverty and racial discrimination, and spurring new interest and expectations for the space program.

Things to Know What was the “New Frontier?” – President Kennedy’s vision for America. It was created to improve the economy, education, healthcare, and civil rights. What was one component of JFK’s New Frontier? – Equality for all Americans, no matter their race or gender.

Things to Know What did JFK’s domestic agenda primarily fight? – Poverty. What was a result of the Equal Pay Act (what did it do)? – It encouraged fair employment practices, not just within the hiring process, but also within the business process, including equal pay for all pay for employees.

Things to Know What was deficit spending used for during the Kennedy administration? – It was a strategy used by JFK to improve the economy as a part of the “new economics” theory. How did JFK initially approach civil rights policies? – Cautiously. He knew that he was at risk to lose the public’s support if he jumped in to it too quickly.

Things to Know What effect did the Cold War have on the American space program? – Competition with the Soviet Union spurred American space missions. What project was a part of the “Space Race?” – The Project Mercury flights.

Things to Know After JFK’s assassination, who succeeded him? – Lyndon B. Johnson, JFK’s Vice President. What was the group called that investigated JFK’s assassination? – The Warren Commission.

Things to Know What did this group conclude about the assassination? – That Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in Kennedy assassination. There are conspiracies that claim otherwise. Do you know what any of them are?
