Lesson 4: Area

English vs. Metric Units Which is larger? A. 1 inch 2 or 1 centimeter 2 B. 1 yard 2 or 1 meter 2 C. 1 mile 2 or 1 kilometer 2 1 in 2 = cm 2 1 yd 2 = m 2 1 mi 2 = 2.59 km 2

Metric Units Area is a measure of how much surface an object has. The base unit of area in the metric system is the square kilometer and is represented by km 2. Metric Units 1 square kilometer (km 2 ) = 1,000,000 square meters(m 2 ) 1 square meter (m 2 ) = 10,000 square centimeters (cm 2 ) 1 square meter (m 2 ) = 1,000,000 square millimeters (mm 2 ) Which is larger? A. 10,000 square millimeters or 10 square meters B. 3.5 square kilometers or 25,000,000 square meters C. 817,000 square centimeters or 8.2 square meters

Measuring Area What is the area of the surface in square centimeters? What is the area of the surface in square meters? What is the area of the surface to the nearest square centimeter? ________ cm 2 HINT: Round to the nearest centimeter after multiplying – no decimals. We can measure the area of an object that has all straight sides using the formula length x width. 5.6 cm 19.2 cm
