Magical Realism- a category of fiction in which fantastic, unbelievable events take place in a realistic setting. Usually, magical realism is associated with Latin American fiction.

Characteristics of Magical Realism Realistic Elements: Recognizable characters, believable dialogue, a true-to-life setting, and , often, accounts of actual historical events. Magical Elements: Supernatural of mysterious elements (Ghosts may appear, dreams may come true, superstitions may prove warranted, people may even fly)

Characteristics of Magical Realism Distortions of Time and Identity: readers often encounter distortions of time and identity. In addition, character may change into other characters, and usual distinctions between living and dead characters may be blurred.
