Alexander Fleming By: Layal Al-Meslemani

What did he discover? Alexander Fleming’s well known and best/famous discoveries were: 1.The enzyme lysozyme which was discovered in He was also famous for discovering the first antibiotic (penicillin) in 1928.

Before Alexander Fleming Discovered Antibiotics he was a biologist a pharmacologist, and a very good researcher which made him quite famous. He was also interested in bacteriology, immunology, chemotherapy. So he wrote articles on them.

How did his discoveries contribute to the society? His discovery of the antibiotic penicillin was known to change history because it was a life saving drug. It was known to treat many bacterial diseases such as syphilis, gangrene, and tuberculosis which were some of the most deadly diseases at the time. Without his discovery many people would have died of diseases. His discovery of the antibiotic made a big difference to the society and led to the development of pharmaceutical industry. Penicillin had saved millions of lives and is still saving many.

How did he discover penicillin? Penicillin was actually an accidental discovery by Alexander Fleming. This happened because he was working with a bacteria called staphylococci. One day he found that the plate that had staphylococci. So he observed that there wasn’t any bacteria near the fungus, and so he made a sensible observation and found out that the fungus killed the bacteria.

Achievements Some of Fleming’s greatest achievements of all are: Receiving a Nobel Prize in the year 1945 in physiology and medicine. When 2000 was approaching at least 3 Swedish magazines rated penicillin as the most important discovery of the millennium. A statue of Alexander Fleming himself stands outside the main building in Madrid.
