Jeopardy Mashkur Husain Incoming Chief Resident VA Hospital

A Jeopardy Call Schedule is maintained to provide coverage for unplanned absences and emergencies. Each month based upon their rotational schedule, residents will be identified as being at Jeopardy, typically on elective rotations Being on Jeopardy means available to take call for up to 16 hours (PGY- 1) or 24+4 hours (PGY-2 & 3) in the event of an emergency preventing the regularly scheduled resident from fulfilling his/her scheduled obligation Jeopardy coverage provided for all three hospitals as well as clinics A monthly rotational “back up” call schedule (known as the Jeopardy Schedule) will be constructed by the CMR and distributed 2-3 weeks before the beginning of each Block. Please check WSUMED for monthly jeopardy schedule as it is updated regularly

Residents must check the schedules prior to each Block and be available for coverage at their assigned times Mutual exchange of Jeopardy shifts is acceptable but MUST be approved by the scheduling CMR One of the junior CMR will be in charge of coordinating Jeopardy The Jeopardy Chief Resident will help decide if Jeopardy is appropriate and will arrange for coverage if needed When calling Jeopardy please also inform the CMR of the respective hospital or Ambulatory Chief

ALL use of the Jeopardy system MUST be approved by the CMR at the rotational site. A resident may NOT, under any circumstances, contact the person “at Jeopardy” directly for coverage. The CMR must be notified of the specific situation requiring Jeopardy coverage and, if approved, will contact the person “at Jeopardy.” Due to abuse of the system in the past, CMR may require further documentation of an absence (at their discretion) and will also monitor paybacks Any abuse of the Jeopardy system will result in assignment of extra Jeopardy shifts. A second violation will result in assignment of extra call months. On the third violation, residents will be referred to the Clinical Competence Committee (CCC; i.e. Professionalism Committee) for placement on probation and considered for dismissal from the program

Getting Called for Jeopardy Residents will be notified by the CMR directly when coverage is needed. Residents may NOT refuse Jeopardy. Unavailability will not be tolerated. Residents may not schedule moonlighting shifts prior to a Jeopardy shift as this is not an acceptable excuse for being unavailable for Jeopardy coverage. Residents are responsible for maintaining access at ALL sites (including the VA) and WILL be assigned extra Jeopardy shifts if they are unavailable for a shift due to lack of active computer access in a system

Getting Called for Jeopardy Residents who are unavailable for a Jeopardy shift WILL be assigned extra Jeopardy shifts. Residents who are unavailable two (2) times will be referred to the CCC for placement on probation. Expected to arrive within 1 hour of being called or beginning of the shift please have your pager on during elective rotation or forwarded to your phone Duty hour violations are also unacceptable.

Payback After having performed coverage in the Jeopardy system, the resident who initially called Jeopardy MUST pay the covering resident back (called a “payback”). There is no designated time-frame during which coverage must be paid back, however it MUST be paid back prior to either resident’s graduation. The “payback” must be of equal or greater value (by number of hours) to the shift covered. A mutually agreeable “payback” is acceptable as long as approved by the CMR Days off may need to be used for paybacks. No extra days off will be given. The CMRs will monitor to make sure the “payback” happens. Notify the CMR in question directly when “payback” occurs.

Abuse of the System Abuse of Jeopardy System: Is directly reportable to the APD and/or PD with repercussions as deemed appropriate by them. Examples of abuse include (but are not limited to) calling the Jeopardy person directly for coverage, inappropriate reasons for calling Jeopardy, failure to show up for a shift after Jeopardy was denied by a CMR. As stated before Jeopardy is for emergency, please arrange for coverage otherwise For the sake of Jeopardy morale, please don’t abuse it, only used during emergency

Any questions ??? Thank you
