9-4 Multiplying and Dividing Rational Expressions (Day 1) Objective: Students will be able to simplify complex fractions

To Simplify An Algebraic Expression: 1. Factor the numerator 2. Factor the denominator 3. Divide out the common factors

Example 1: Simplify 8y 2 (y-2) 2y(y 2 –y -2) = 8y 2 (y-2) 2y(y-2)(y+1) 1. Factor Numerator 2. Factor Denominator

Divide out common factors of (y-2) Divide out common monomial factor of 2y Final Answer

Example 2: You Try: Simplify 9 (x+7) 4 (x-2) 6 27 (x+7) 9 (x-2) 2 Reduce Numerator and Denominator by 9 1 (x+7) 4 (x-2) 6 3 (x+7) 9 (x-2) 2 (x-2) 4 3 (x+7) 5 Divide out common factors of (x+7) and (x-2)

Example 3: Simplify: Factor out common factors -1 (x 2 + 2x – 8) 3x (x 2 + 3x – 10) Factor numerator and denominator -1 (x + 4)(x – 2) 3x (x + 5)(x – 2)

-1 (x + 4)(x – 2) 3x (x + 5)(x – 2) Divide out the common binomial factor of (x - 2). Final Answer -1 (x + 4) 3x (x + 5) OR -x– 4 3x (x + 5)
