Staff Advisory Committee to the Dean 10 year Anniversary Presented by the History Subcommittee Bob Lumley-Sapanski and Sara May

The Beginnings  The seeds for the committee were planted by staff in the Department of Agronomy (Crop and Soil Sciences) who had formed their own staff committee.

 With support from interim Dean Ted Alter a committee of 11 members was established on May 7,  William Pielielek, Chair  Mike Davis  Cheryl Evans  Cheryl Keller  Lou Klindienst  Jeanne Price  Eston Martz  Paul Rebarchek  Christina Richards  Mike Soika  Sharon Spicer The Beginnings

 Robert Steele began his tenure as Dean on July 1, 1997 and gave his full support to the growth and development of the committee.  The committee first decided there should be representation from all of the units in the College and established some at-large appointments to ensure diversity on the committee.  A subcommittee was formed to develop a charter to govern the operations of the committee.

The Beginnings  Charged to meet and discuss staff issues in the College of Agricultural Sciences and forward recommendations and solutions to the Dean.

Early issues addressed by the committee…  Need for a better means of communication to the staff  Cap on staff promotion salary increases  Establishment of staff committees in all units  Staff representation on search committees  A new employee orientation program  Fixed term/HR86 issues  Oversight on how professional development monies are spent  Establishment of the College-wide meeting with the Dean

Just a few of our Accomplishments  Recommended the development of what eventually became the ACTS program.  Suggested the development of a staff orientation program for new staff.  Implementation of the Staff Laureate Awards.  Host the Ella Reagle Staff Assistant Award.  Recommended improvements to the PIQ timetable.

Just a few of our Accomplishments  Promoted implementation of AED programs and provided information on AED resources.  Communication and collaboration with the College’s Faculty Advisory Committee to the Dean (FACD).  Website subcommittee  Leadership subcommittee  History subcommittee

University Impact  Set an example for the development of other staff committees within the University.  Establishment of AED programs throughout the University.  Representation on the University SAC

College-Wide Meetings  Organize bi-annual staff meetings with the Dean:  College-wide meeting planning subcommittee  Survey review and Focus Groups

College-wide meeting highlights  East-subcampus construction project  Ergonomics – Mike Burke  PSU policies on Maternity, Paternity, Child Care and Elder Care – Linda Pierce  Wellness and Health Matters – Cassandra Kitko  Information on Competencies Program – Bill Devlin  United Way updates  AEDs in the College featuring Homer Mazer  Fitness opportunities at Penn State – Jill Garrigan
