Introduction GeoData 2014 Workshop #geodata2014 June 17-19, 2014,NCAR, Boulder, CO Peter Fox (RPI) Tetherless World Constellation

Thanks to NCAR (Mary and Matt and …)

#geodata2011 March 2-4, 2011, Broomfield, CO nity/GeoData2011http://tw.rpi.edu/web/Workshop/Commu nity/GeoData2011 Life cycle, integration and citation nity/GeoData2011/Participants (~100) nity/GeoData2011/Participants 2012…. 2013….

Key points that cut across all three-subject areas were: A shift is needed within agencies to provide longer-term funding support, for communities to come together, remain coherent and to enable data stewardship, integration and citation within their communities and across to other communities (to the extent possible). Agencies like USGS, NASA and NOAA must also play a key role in sustaining geoscience cyberinfrastructure by moving research advances into operations. Community-wide standards and practices should build from demonstrated successes, be widely disseminated, and tools need to be developed to support them. Education is critical to broader adoption. Marketing studies need to be conducted to provide the business case for full stewardship, integration and citation, and incentives are needed to encourage everyone to participate in making data integratable, citable, etc.

Agency Recommendations Create an interagency working group to foster data life cycle management practices, support coordination and informatics science initiatives, and to develop a high level shared vision and strategy for data life cycle management Create and fund a coordination office that works with the “working” level of agencies and academic institutions to facilitate working groups and workshops, adoption of standards and tools, and creation of sustainable archives Support and actively participate in existing coordination groups, and create where needed, new communities of practice in data life cycle management across agencies, academic institutions, and the private sector Establish an NSF working group to address the issue of incentives and cultural change needed to facilitate implementation of data life-cycle management

Our sponsors Earthcube funding but NOT an Earthcube event – results will feed into Earthcube and other venues Of relevance to Office of Science and Technology Policy - National Strategy For Civil Earth Observations (2013) But many other organizational entities Um, your agencies, institutions….

What we want to do: Meet new peers in disciplines and communities that heretofore have not had sufficient means to become acquainted Extend nascent inter-agency connections in areas of common development/ application interest. Share state-of-the-art experience and practices in digital and distributed data management Explore technology, organizational, cultural and social challenges of multi-scale geo-datasets, as well as other challenges not currently being addressed. Identify software challenges, and formulate ‘sprint’ activities on focused topics.

Broadly speaking… (1) Social, political and financial issues of connecting geodata within and among governmental agencies and (2) Technical issues of connecting geodata within and among governmental agencies. You are here to work!

~ Outcomes Consensus around tangible activities (at least 3) active over the next 6 mo, 1 yr – progress at ESIP (and others) Working level collaborations around geodata (at least 3) Clear opportunities for where and how the geodata network can be enhanced… Report will be sent to NSF, agencies, OSTP, etc.

So, what’s it gonna be?

Who are you…?
