Regional Policy What is happening so far? New legislative package for period adopted by European Commission in October 2011 On-going negotiations at the Council and at the European Parliament Adoption of new regulations foreseen in the course of 2013

Regional Policy But… Beforehand, agreement on the EU budget must be reached …in principle before the end of 2012

Regional Policy Other type of strategies Developing a Maritime Strategy for the Atlantic Ocean Area (Communication of the Commission of 21/11/2011) – Action Plan in preparation Based on 5 themes: -- Implementing the ecosystem approach -- Reducing Europe’s carbon footprint -- Sustainable exploitation of the Atlantic seafloor’s natural resources -- Responding to threats and emergencies -- Socially inclusive growth

Regional Policy Other type of strategies Developing a European Union Policy towards the Arctic Region (Joint Communication Commission / High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of 26/6/2012) - Review EU’s contribution to the Arctic since Future enhanced commitment with Arctic partners - Aim is to protect the Arctic environment and support sustainable and peaceful development in the region

Regional Policy And what about the Northern Periphery? Commission proposes the geography of the future programmes. Proposal will be submitted soon to the MS for their comments. In principle Commission supports continuity of programmes to be adapted in case of macro-regional strategies.

Regional Policy What else? Preparation of operational programmes in parallel to ongoing negotiations Objective: to speed up approval of programmes as soon as entry into force of regulations (1/1/2014)

Regional Policy And to conclude… The Commission looks forward to the new generation of programmes to demonstrate that European Territorial Cooperation represents an added value for all participating countries and all citizens.
