Screech is back!! He has one last rule to teach you!

It is time to meet a very special defender! She is the last defender…but is a very important defender to know! She protects little vowels that are alone too!

Sometimes …. When you see the h brother, in a word, he tries to chase t he little vowel, if it is alone in the word! I bet you can guess who we need to save these little, lonely vowels!

Defender t to the rescue!! See how she saves the day!

Let’s make this word- What are they playing? Time for Defender t to save the day! Now the word is complete!! Say the sounds with me.

Let’s make this word- Do we need Defender t in this word? When there are two vowels in the word, they can protect each other! No need for Defender t !

Let’s make this word- Bring in Defender t ! Now the word is complete! Say the sounds with me!

Let’s make another word! We need Defender t again! Now say the sounds with me!

Let’s make this word too! Do we need Defender t to save the little vowel? Because there is another letter in between the vowel & the ch that chases, we don’t need Defender t ! The letter that stands between the ch & the vowel will protect the vowel.

How about this word? The alligator has just begun to ___?__. Who do we need? Nice Work! Now say the sounds with me!

Now let’s look at these words & decide if we need Defender t ! This vowel is all alone & might get chased! We need Defender t ! Defender t to the rescue! This vowel is all alone & might get chased! We do not need Defender t ! Two vowels can protect each other! This extra letter protects the vowel! Two vowels can protect each other! This vowel is all alone & might get chased! This extra letter protects the vowel!

Nice work, Boys & Girls! I am so glad you all know how to use DEFENDER t in your writing & reading! Keep up the excellent work in school!
