Hands On Support Diagnostic Tool

What is Hands on Support? sharing good practice in the use of ICT to enhance teaching and learning classroom based support for teachers differentiated support, suited to individual teachers’ needs support that goes beyond basic skills and technology releasing value from prior investment in ICT infrastructure, equipment, connectivity and training

Hands on Support is NOT… basic ICT skills training technical support school leadership training ICT as a discrete subject one size fits all

What is the HOS diagnostic tool? A self-evaluation and action planning tool which aims to help schools: identify staff who may benefit from HOS identify staff who may become HOS providers identify staff who may benefit from basic ICT skills training

Why should teachers use the diagnostic tool? allows them to evaluate their approach to ICT creates an individual action plan for each teacher provides HOS manager with a report on all staff to help them make decisions about maximising the value they get from the HOS programme

What do I get out of it? Teacher – individual action plan

An individual action plan is created

When matrix is completed: Teacher enters their HOS token Token is unique to that school Allows only the HOS Manager to see the school report

What do I get out of it? Teacher – individual action plan If teacher enters HOS token matrix results are made available to the HOS Manager - reports showing: who would benefit from Hands On Support who might be able to be a HOS provider who may benefit from basic ICT skills training

Report by individual users

Report by filtered scores

First group These teachers probably need to improve their basic skills and confidence to use ICT before embarking on HOS support. Second group These staff have sufficient personal skills to gain from Hands on Support. The school needs to decide from the profile of these staff who would benefit from HOS support, given the resources available and the needs of the school. Third group Could be potential Hands on Support Providers.

The HOS Matrix has been designed to help schools think about how to make best use of the resources available to them. The groupings of teachers shown on the previous slide are only indicative. Schools should exercise judgement and interpret the results using common sense and their own knowledge of staff. For example: –teachers at the top end of category 2 may have the right skills to be Hands on Support providers.

Hands on Support matrix will be available at Further information on Hands on Support is available on at
