Workshop: National Disaster Observatory for Your Country [DATE] {PLACE}

Goal To set the conditions to implement a National Disaster Observatory which will help linking disaster risk knowledge to decision making in recovery, risk reduction and development programmes.

Other Observatories NATIONAL DISASTER OBSERVATORY Observer Disaster Data Portal STANDARDS NDO NATIONAL DISASTER OBSERVATORY Observer Disaster Data Portal NDO NATIONAL DISASTER OBSERVATORY Observer Disaster Data Portal END USERS NDO Disasters

Review the challenges in establishing disaster loss databases Discuss examples of generation of risk knowledge Discuss the possible application of the Observatory in post-disaster situations Objectives

At the end of the workshop the participants: –Must have a good understanding of the concepts of Disaster, hazard, vulnerability and risk –Should have a basic understanding of Disaster Risk Management and its main areas: Prevention, Mitigation, Early Warning, Emergency management/Relief, Rehabilitation/Recovery and reconstruction. –Should be absolutely capable of participating in building the Disaster Inventory of the Observatory.

Objectives At the end of the workshop the participants: –Should understand and be able to explain to others: The basic concepts of the DesInventar Methodology: Event, Disaster, Datacard, Geographic Unit, etc. The set of recommendations made by the methodology, especially those related to data disaggregating –Should be very familiar with the DesConsultar module and be able to: Produce progress reports on the work done Produce preliminary analysis on the information gathered (content, temporal and spatial analysis) –Should be very familiar with the DesInventar module and be able to: Enter, modify, correct and manipulate disaster data Enter, modify, correct and manipulate geographical codes and names –Should be able to administer DesInventar databases –Should be able to install and configure the system in a Windows Server operating system (at least) –Should be able to maintain backups copies of all data –Should have a basic understanding on how to report a bug –Should have a preliminary idea of how to customize the software
