Environmental Science Chapter 8 Notes #1 Land Use

Chapter 8 : Land The City  Fast Facts Urban Area – more than 5000 people per square mile  According to US census Bureau – more than 2500 people 2% of the US land is Urban areas 80% of Americans live in urban areas  Urbanization – movement of people from rural to urban areas Happened heavily from 1880 – 1950 Why?  Importance of Rural Areas….

Chapter 8 : Land The City  Urban Crisis Too many people move too fast into the cities before adequate infrastructure can be established Infrastructure – things built for public use  Example: roads, schools, sewers, firehouses

Chapter 8 : Land The City Consequence of Urban Crisis Suburban sprawl -development around cities  Characterized by houses & strip malls  More living space, less $, less crime  Suburbs! (since ’92 more Americans live there than cities and countryside combined)

Chapter 8 : Land The City  Land Use Planning Determining in advance where:  People will live  Roads will be built  Land will be protected  Etc  Tools – Geographic information system (GIS) Only works effectively when done before urban crisis begins…  A long term solution

Chapter 8 : The City  Short term solutions Mass Transportation  Economic, efficient, reduces air pollution, reduces loss of land for roads Inner city Renovation  People head to suburbs, business follows, city falls…use grants & incentives to fix up fallen areas

Chapter 8 : The City  Short term solutions Open Spaces  Parks (Yellowstone), gardens, historical areas, agricultural, etc  Positives Alleviate crowding greenery absorbs CO 2 produces O 2 helps filter pollutants
