SOIL TEXTURE GEOGRAPHY 6A CAMERON LAWRENCE

WHAT IS SOIL TEXTURE ? The term soil texture refers to the degree of coarseness or fitness of the mineral matter in the soil. It is determined by the proportion of sand , silt and clay particles. *NOTE- Particles larger than sand are grouped together and described as stones.

SANDY SOIL: SANDY SOIL FEELS GRITTY AND LACKS COHESION.

SILTY SOIL: A silty soil has a smoother, soap like feel as well as having some cohesion.

CLAY SOILS: A clay soil sticky and plastic when wet and being very cohesive, maybe rolled into various shapes.

SOIL TESTING: there are several ways to test soil samples three easy to do test are by feel, sieving and sedimentation. 1) FEEL:

SOIL TESTING CON’T: 2) SIEVING:

SOIL TESTING CONT: 3) SEDIMENTATION:

SOIL TEXTURE ANALYSIS (TRIANGULAR GRAPH)

THE IMPORTANCE OF TEXTURE: As texture controls the size and spacing of soil pores, it directly affects the soil water content, water flow and extent of aeration. * TEXTURE GREATLY INFLUENCES SOIL STRUCTURE.

CONCLUSION: HOW DOES TEXTURE AFFECT FARMING
