Reconstruction After the Civil War Don’t Copy The Civil War was devastating on the American way of life. It was especially hard on the south. Most of the battles were fought in the south. Throughout the South property was destroyed, lost, or stolen. Life was difficult and painfully slow to get back to normal. Our government had several ideas on how to help get life back to normal.

Southerners resented Northern “carpetbaggers,” who took advantage of the South during Reconstruction. Southern states adopted Black Codes to limit the economic and physical freedom of former slaves.

End of Reconstruction Reconstruction ended in 1877 as a result of a compromise over the outcome of the election of 1876. Federal troops were removed from the South. Rights that African Americans had gained were lost through “Jim Crow” laws.
