Listening Guides

“Love Don’t Live Here” 0:00 Intro- The song starts with the guitar and the mandolin playing the dynamic. The beat of the song is nice and easy all the way through. 0:06 Verse 1- The vocals start with Charles Kelley. The guitar and the mandolin are still playing the same melody. About half way through the drums come in and pick up the beat. In this verse he talks about his old lover coming back to see him. He says “there is nothing that you can say or do to take what you did back”. Knowing that he wrote this song from an actual experience of his, he puts a lot of emotion into it. 1:16 Chorus- All three artists sing the chorus of the song. Nothing changes except for the notes the mandolin plays. They are higher and sound more “twangy” throughout the chorus. This is where the name of the song is really brought out, “Love don’t live here anymore”. 1:53 Verse 2- In this verse the guitar has an interesting few notes that I really like. It is at the 2:07 mark. It comes after the words, “you can try to justify everything you did”. These notes make it sound like whatever she would say obviously would not work. Charles Kelley also hit’s a high not to show the emotion of the words and power of which he uses them. 2:28 Chorus- The end chorus is the same as the first and runs right into the coda. 3:00 Coda- The drums come in really strong and pick up the beat. The guitar and mandolin also pick up and become louder. The vocals octaves reach a higher point giving the sound of attitude in his voice. He finishes out the song repeating the title over and over.

“Need You Now” 0:00 Intro- The song starts out with guitar and piano with the drums coming in to set the beat. For the beginning they play a answering machine message from a man to his wife saying that he really misses her and wants her to call back. 0:36 Verse 1- The guitar and piano continue playing the melody while the drums pick up. This gives the song a more intense feeling and really grabs your attention to make you listen. Hillary Scott starts out with the vocals with the woman‘s side. 1:06 Chorus- Both Hillary and Charles sing the chorus in the song. They really pick up the volume and emotion. They are singing as if they are the two people, the man who left the message and the woman who’s phone he called. The instruments stay the same. 1:40 Verse 2- This is the man’s side of the vocals. Charles Kelley is the one singing. The beat and instrumentals of the song continue to stay the same, not much variation throughout the whole thing. 2:11 Chorus- The chorus is really where the title of the song is brought out in a lot of emotion. They say “I don’t know how I can do without, I just need you now!” I know this is how a lot of people feel in their own lives, it is definitely how Charles felt as he was writing this song 2:53 Coda- The song closes with, what I think, is the best line to sum up the whole song. They say, “Yes Id rather hurt then feel nothing at all”. 3:47 Closing- The guitar, drums and piano continue a run that helps you continue to think of the words of the song. The guitar is still playing the melody, but the drums and piano hit several notes which bring a feeling of no closure to the song.

“Own the Night” 0:00- The song starts with the organ playing a simple drawn out note. A about 0:10 the guitar and mandolin come in to set and play the dynamic. This is a pretty high tempo fun song with a lot of feeling. 0:20 Verse 1- Starts with Charles Kelley singing the vocals. The instruments stay the same until 0:39 when the drums come in really strong. This gives the feeling of more emotion and more importance on what he is singing at that moment. 1:09 Verse 2- Same instrumentals with Charles and Hillary Scott coming in very softly to sing harmony with him. 1:34 Guitar Solo- Dave Haywood has a guitar solo in right about the middle of the song. He only goes for about 10 seconds, but it gives you the chance to pause and think about what is going on in the story of the song. 1:44 Verse 3- Vocals continue with Charles and Hillary. The instruments also stay the same with the guitar dieing down through the verse. 2:03 Coda- All the instruments die out except for the mandolin and drums. It gives the feeling that the things they are about to say are very important and need to be listened to very carefully. 2:40 Closing- Starts with Charles yelling “yeah” to emphasize what he just sang. He and Hillary then go through a section of section of runs to close the song with instruments still playing the same dynamic as the whole song.

“Lookin’ for a Good Time” 0:00 Intro- Starts with Charles Kelley just talking. He says, “Hey what you drinkin baby?” The electric guitar comes in first followed by the drums to set the beat. Him talking at the beginning really sets the fun mood of the song. The electric guitar also helps with its really unique signature. 0:18 Verse 1- Charles Kelley starts with the vocals while the instruments continue to play the same. Hillary Scott comes in at 0:34 to sing as the girl he is trying to pick up in the bar. Toward the end of the verse the drums pick up the tempo to lead into the chorus. 0:49 Chorus- The drums stay at the high tempo throughout the chorus while the guitar is still playing the same. Charles and Hillary together say, “I’m just lookin for a good time!” They sing that over and over. 1:15 Verse 2- The electric guitar begins to play at a higher tempo. It makes the verse feel very choppy and quick. Again toward the end of the verse the drums also pick up the tempo to lead into the chorus. 1:47 Chorus- The chorus repeats the same as it did before. 2:07 Guitar Solo- Dave Haywood has a short guitar solo in between the chorus and the coda. He uses the great sound of the electric guitar. There is a very small range in this solo, he never really takes it up a notch until the end of his solo. 2:14 Coda- The instruments get very quite so you can only hear them in the background of the song. Charles and Hillary continue to sing the vocals. 2:32 Chorus- To finish out the song they return to the chorus. It is the same as the first to until the end where they hold out the notes for the finale’.
