Learning objectives After the completion of this unit the learner will be able to: Understand what to do with the digitized content he/she created in his/her digitization project Understand which functions of the Digital Library may be considered crucial for its successful operation Have a basic orientation in the coexistence and cooperation of the Digital Library in a larger information environment on Internet

Digital Library It is designed to aggregate the digital content that should be presented altogether It has usually two large component parts: A searchable database that is using the processed and indexed XML files from the digital documents A searchable database that is using the processed and indexed XML files from the digital documents A viewer for serving the images efficiently A viewer for serving the images efficiently The database operates centrally, but the data banks with images, audio or video files can be dispersed in Internet

DL database Data Bank 1 Data Bank 2 Data Bank n ……………………

The database The database can communicate with portals via communication protocols, preferably via OAI-PMH (Open Archive Initiative – Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) or Z39:50 (no longer preferred) OAI-PMH – it enables harvesting of metadata and creation of a central index at the portal that can navigate the user through manz digital libraries and resources from a uniform interface OAI-PMH – it enables harvesting of metadata and creation of a central index at the portal that can navigate the user through manz digital libraries and resources from a uniform interface Z39:50 – it communicates in real time and slows down the response of the portal to user’s needs Z39:50 – it communicates in real time and slows down the response of the portal to user’s needs Example: The European Library TEL is such a portal enabling fast search in hundreds of resources /

Added technological values of the digital library (DL) DL itself can implement a portal technology and via metadata harvesting offer larger services to its users / it can search in parallel in cooperating resources DL viewer can offer enhanced viewing opportunities via: Application of more image quality levels for representation of a single page/object Application of more image quality levels for representation of a single page/object Application of an image server working on demand where necessary Application of an image server working on demand where necessary Application of a combined display of image with parallel full text Application of a combined display of image with parallel full text

Manuscriptorium Digital Library viewer offers various quality levels of digital images for the same page Normal quality Thumbnail/Gallery quality Preview quality Usually the page is represented by: thumbnail preview low black-and-white normal quality images

Manuscriptorium viewer serving historical maps using Lizardtech Express Image Server – a possible solution for access to large images on Internet

Manuscriptorium Digital Library combined viewer Page image with full text

OAI-PMH profile The profile in OAI-PMH (also in Z39:50) is a metadata record that is offered by the resource to be harvested by the portal It can be any kind of agreed record, but for OAI-PMH one of the offered profiles must be a Dublin Core Unqualified record Dublin Core UnqualifiedDublin Core Unqualified

Useful references 2/usageguide/ 2/usageguide/ / Dublin Core Metadata Initiative User Guide 2/usageguide/ / Open Archives Initiative Digital Library Initiatives / there are many and should be seen as cultural and political programmes or projects / just search the web to find some of them
