APNIC Update

4th time at NZNOG … Let’s do something different this time

“APNIC Super-Mega Ultimate NZ Challenge” Or rather… Just another way of doing the usual APNIC update

Rules of the game 2 teams - 3 pple per team 10 Questions First team who knows the answer, signals Incorrect answer - question goes over to other team Judge’s (Nurani’s) decision is final –(May be bribed with beer)

1. Ok, let’s get off to an easy start… What does APNIC actually do? (In general - not in this photo…) Correct answer: Internet resource management (IPv4, IPv6, ASN, reverse DNS), training, facilitating policy development, infrastructure development (anycast root server deployment, development grants etc)

2. After having studied the subject in detail… …Geoff Huston here demonstrates how much IPv4 address space is left today. … But how much IPv4 address space does his study show, is actually left today? Correct answer: 25% is still in the IANA reserved pool (61% allocated by RIRs, 37% Pre-RIR, 13% “special purpose”)

3. APNIC… …works together with various root server operators in facilitating the development of anycast root servers in the Asia Pacific. How many root servers are there in total in the region? Correct answer: 32 (19 supported by APNIC, 13 others)

4. True or False? The policy-SIG is where APNIC policy is made. Only APNIC members and account-holders are allowed to attend this SIG at the APNIC meetings. Correct answer: False - Anyone can participate in policy development (and attend the Policy-SIG)

5. APNIC meetings are held twice a year… …Where was the last APNIC meeting held? Correct answer: Perth, Australia

6. In the routing-SIG at APNIC 21… … the following quote from the Hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy (about the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation products) was used : “It is very easy to be blinded by the essential uselessness of them, by the sense of achievement that you get from getting them to work at all. ‘In other words - and this is the rock solid principle on which the whole of the Corporation's Galaxy-wide success is founded - their fundamental design flaws are completely hidden by their superficial design flaws.” In what presentation was this used? a) BGP convergence : Better handling of silent peer failures b) Routing security - an oversimplification c) Complexity: The Internet and telco philosophies Correct answer: c) Complexity: “The Internet and telco philosophies” (by Randy Bush)

7. True or False? NAT & private addressing is recommended by APNIC to save IP addresses? ? Correct answer: Nope! - The use of NAT is entirely up to the user/ISP - not something enforced in any way by the RIRs…

8. What the heck is… ICONS? Correct answer: Internet Community Of Network Specialists (An online forum where technical info for ISPs is shared and discussed.)

9. Current IPv6 policy… …is under discussion. One part of the policy discussed is the current fixed end-site assignment size of a /48. The minimal allocation is /32. So… …how many /48 end-site assignments can be made in a /32 allocation…? Correct answer: ( = 2 16 ) 1270 LIR /32 32 Customer Site /48 ? Subnet /64 ? ? Device /128

True or False? Andy Linton is embarrassingly good at karaoke? Correct answer: Yup, it’s true… (Although this video might not do his talents justice…)

And the winners are…
