Cornell Notes Table Talk: How did you learn the skill of note-taking? How did this skill contribute to your success? Let’s share as an entire group.

Note-Taking 1.Create your Cornell notepaper. 2.Write in the Essential Question. 3.Use preferred style and organization.

Cornell Notes Practice Time! Step 1: Note taking: You will take notes on the slides and what I read to you. Please do not write in the left column until I ask you to do so.

Our Essential Question How can I ensure that I learn the college-readiness skill of structured note- taking?

History of Cornell Notes Developed in 1949 at Cornell University by Walter Pauk Designed in response to frustration over student test scores; meant to be used easily as a test study guide Adopted by most major law schools as the preferred note-taking method

Why Is Note-Taking Important? Allows students to help each other problem solve Helps students organize and process data and information Helps students recall by allowing them to process their notes multiple times Writing is a great tool for learning.

Pyramid of Retention Jerome S. Bruner, The Process of Learning (p. 160)

Cornell Notes In college you may be taught lessons via the tools listed below. Cornell notes will help make sure you understand and REMEMBER what you are learning.  Lectures  Textbooks  Discussions  Audio/Visual  Other

How will you be rewarded for taking Cornell Notes? Occasionally you’ll be allowed to use notes on tests and/or quizzes. You’ll notice your grades improve because Cornell Notes have helped you grasp the material. You’ll feel confident when you get to college and hopefully won’t be part of the “turkey drop.”

End of Notes! But wait, we’ve only just started!

Note-Making 1.Underline key information in the notes. 2.Fill in gaps with a partner. 3.Look for “chunks” of notes. (3) 4.Write corresponding questions on left side.

Note-Interacting 1.Compare your questions with a partner. Should you make any changes or do your notes look good? 2.Answer each question you’ve written to compose a summary. Use the EQ as the beginning of your summary then use chunk #1, #2, and #3 to finish summary. 3.Share your summary with the class. 4.Use the completed notes as a learning tool/study guide (e.g., fold-over method).

Note-Reflecting Reflect on how the notes have prepared you for tests. – (After the test, review your notes. Did they help you? How? What would you do differently next chapter when taking notes?)

But how do I remember how to take notes without Mrs. Lentz helping me? Remember STAR: – Set up page – Take notes – Actively listen/analyze material – Review, revise, reflect

Cornell Notes Magic The only way that anyone learns anything is through repetition. (90 encounters w/ brain before long term memory.) How many repetitions of the material did we just get using the Cornell notes method? See sample notes (pp. 1 32– 1 37).

Cornell Notes Practice Let’s practice using Cornell notes in our subject area. Create one page of new Cornell notes in your notebook. (You may create your own or there are always copies in the drawer near the front door.)

El verbo hay Essential Question (EQ): What does the verb hay mean and how is it used?

Hay has only one form in present tense. The verb hay means there is or there are. Its meaning depends on the noun that follows. EX: – Hay muchas personas aquí. – Hay mucho dinero en el banco.

There is an idiomatic expression that is used with the verb hay: hay que. It means one must or it is necessary to and it is followed by an infinitive. EX: – Hay que estudiar./ One must study. – Hay que dormir./ It is necessary to sleep.

End of Notes! 1.Underline/Highlight 2.Fill in gaps with partner 3.Chunk info/Separate by drawing line on paper if it helps you 4.Write questions on left 5.Compare with partner 6.Write summary 7.Share summary 8.Use notes to study and help with classwork

Práctica Traduzcan al español: 1.There are six books here. 2.There is a Mexican woman in the class. 3.One must be here at 7:40 am. 4.It is necessary to go to Tegucigalpa. 5.There are many students in class.
