The American Club Sponsored by: The Institute on the Constitution. Steps to Starting an Campus Club on your High School or College

You need members… Gather a group of students with a vested interest in the foundation of American law and government, current events, and politics. – 2 students is all that is required and this is a great start. Small numbers can do great things! – Try to be diverse: age, gender, race, political views, religion, etc.

Teacher Sponsor Find a teacher/advisor to sponsor the club by allowing you to use his/her room for meetings. Any classroom with work, just a few things to consider: – Consider internet connection – Consider some discussion may include Skypeing guest speakers in.

Meeting Format Determine how often the meetings will be held (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly) – Choose best days and frequency so as not to alienate students involved in other activities. Determine the length of your meetings (30 minutes, 1 hr, etc. - generally 1 hour is required for the curriculum). – Make this decision together as a group so everyone’s perspective is heard.

Register with the School Submit the idea for the club to either the school principal or a designated assistant principal. – Include the purpose of the club and proposed meeting dates.

The American Club is a student-led club that exists to educate students about the importance of our constitutional liberties and their source in God. As part of a nationwide effort to promote constitutional literacy, Liberty Counsel is proud to stand behind the student leaders of American Clubs to assist in the exercise of their First Amendment rights in order to hear and present various viewpoints on these subjects. Should the American Club on your campus experience opposition from those opposed to the principles of the Club, Liberty Counsel stands ready to provide legal services to the American Club and its student participants at no charge, and to assist your Club in its mission.
