Projectile Motion

Definition this type of motion involves a combination of uniform and accelerated motion When an object is thrown horizontally from a height, the object appears to undergo 2 types of motion 1. Vertical accelerated motion of free-fall 2. Horizontal motion which is uniform motion

Projectile Motion - Vertical accelerated motion - Horizontal uniform motion

Projectile Motion The vertical displacement is called the height The horizontal displacement is called the range The two types of motion act independently of each other

Examples Any object thrown in the air

Solving Projectile Problems Find the vertical “ ” and horizontal “ ” components of the initial velocity Use the initial “ ”, and the free-fall formula to solve questions concerning the vertical aspect of the motion Use the initial “ ”, and the uniform motion formula to solve questions concerning the horizontal aspect of the motion.

Initial vertical velocity - Zero V = 20.0 m/s horizontal Strikes ground in 5.00 s

Initial vertical velocity - Positive V = 20.0 m/s at 30.0 o upwards Strikes ground in 5.00 s

Initial vertical velocity - Negative V = 20.0 m/s at 30.0 o upwards Strikes ground in 5.00 s

Assumptions the free-fall acceleration g is constant over the range of motion and is directed downward The effect of air resistance is negligible fendt.de/ph11e/projectile.htm fendt.de/ph11e/projectile.htm
