Future of Transportation In the coming decades, transportation in the U.S. is expected to change radically in response to environmental constraints, fluctuating oil availability and economic factors.

Future Decision-Makers The transportation systems that emerge in the 21 st century will be defined largely by the choices, skills and imaginations of today’s youth and that is YOU!

Future Workforce As scientists and engineers, you will develop new vehicle and fuel technologies. As citizens, we will make decisions balancing mobility, environmental, and economic needs.

Concepts Taught By The Junior Solar Sprint Alternative energy sources Teamwork How design effects function Aerodynamics Force Motion Problem solving

Vehicle Specifications 1.The vehicle must be safe (no sharp edges, projectiles) 2.The vehicle must fit the following dimensions: 30 cm. by 60 cm. by 30 cm. 1.Decals and decor are optional. A 3 cm. by 3 cm. space must be left for the assigned car number. 2.The only motor that can be used it the one given to your team.

Vehicle Specifications (cont.) 5. The vehicle must be steered by the guide wire. Eyelets or paper clips are affixed to the vehicle. The vehicle must be easily removable from the guide wire.

Track Specifications 1.The length of the race course is 20 meters long. 2.Race lanes are at least 60 cm. wide. 3.The guide wire will be located in the center of the track. 4.The track is a hard, flat, smooth surface.

Wheels, Gears, and Axles Note: Installing wheels and gears on axles can be difficult. Be careful not to bend the axle. The gears and wheels should fit snugly to the axle and provide power to the wheels.

Rear Axle Assembly Step 1 Select optimal tooth gear for driven gear. 40 tooth 30 tooth 20 tooth

(Rear) Axle Assembly Step 4 Carefully press the gear from one end of the axle and place it in the proper location for your design. Driven gear (20,30, or 40 tooth)

(Rear) Axle Assembly Slide nylon spacers onto axle and then press-fit wheels onto axle ends.

Front Axle Assembly Slide two nylon spacers onto the axle. Press fit the wheels onto the axle.

Attaching Axle Assemblies to Chassis Using a machinist square carefully draw perpendicular lines (line B and line C) to where the axles will be placed on the chassis (bottom). Line B Line C

Attaching Axle Assemblies to Chassis Partners hold the rear axle assembly in the correct position on line. Hot glue along the sides of the nylon spacers to chassis. Hold the rear axle assembly in place until the glue cools. Repeat for front axle. Nylon spacer must overhang chassis to prevent wheels from rubbing. Line B Line C

Attaching Motor Assembly to Chassis Press-fit the smallest gear onto the axle of the motor. Motor

Attaching Motor Assembly to Chassis Hot glue motor so that the driver (small) gear meshes with the driven (larger) gear. Make sure that the gears freely spin while interlocking with each other. Hold the motor in place while the glue cools.

Solar Panel Assembly Connect the alligator clips to the leads on the motor. Note: If the car is going in the wrong direction (backward) switch the alligator clips with respect to the wires on the motor.
