Do Now: Monday 12/20 What language do you think I am speaking? How many of you speak more than one language? How do you think English sounds to non-English speakers?

Objective: What economic, political, and cultural factors have led to the widespread diffusion of the English language? How has the widespread diffusion of the English language led to variation in how it is spoken? What are some examples of this?

Language How does geography explain how there are so many languages spoken throughout the world? What role does language play in one’s identity? What role does language play in folk/pop culture? What would this guy say about the importance of language?

English Language Why are so many countries multi- lingual? Why do so many people know or want to learn English? If English is so important, should it be the official language of the United States?
