Zvolen of today Zvolen is a district seat with an area of 759 square kilometres, with almost 68 thousand inhabitants, and it borders on seven other districts of the Banská Bystrica region. The oldest part of the town is the present Námestie SNP (SNP Square) at an altitude of approximately 295 metres above sea level. Nowadays it is a modern pedestrian zone and the centre of social life.

Zvolen of today ICE-HOCKEY Hockey players HKM Zvolen obtained a second master's degree in history of Slovak Republic in April ANNIVERSARY OF OUR CITY Zvolen is one of the oldest cities in Slovakia and in 2013 marks the 770th Anniversary of urban renewal privileges.

History Zvolen has lived for years under the auspices of the Castle, today known as the Deserted Castle, which was the seat of the royal “komitat”, that is a territory stretching in the area of the whole today’s Central Slovakia.

History The town is connected with the name of Ľudovít Štúr who was the first deputy in the Hungarian Parliament and he represented just the town of Zvolen. Our school is called by him. In 1871 a railway station was built in Zvolen and one year later the Hungarian northern railway.

History Nowadays Zvolen is a seat of several prosperous businesses, elementary and secondary schools and also the Technical University that is the only one in Slovakia that educates experts in the wood- processing area. Culture is represented by the J.G. Tajovsky Theatre with its permanent scene as well as by the tens of dance, theatre, song and musical groups which spread a good reputation of the town in Slovakia and foreign countries as well.

Sightseeing Sightseeing ZVOLEN CASTLE ZVOLEN CASTLE This Gothic castle with the Renaissance fortification is situated on the mild hilltop at the southern part of the square. It was built by King Louis the Great of Anjou in the last third of the 14th century as a hunting residence according to Italian town castells.

Sightseeing Sightseeing THE EVANGELICAL CHURCH OF THE ST. TRINITY OF THE ST. TRINITY Although the town of Zvolen has always been powerfully evangelical, the Protestants could not build their church right away. In 1783 they decided to buy the Bossani’s house in the square and in 1785 it was rebuilt in a modest house of God.

THE ROMAN CATHOLIC ST. ELIZABETH’S CHURCH It is a dominant historical building of Námestie SNP (SNP Square). Its sacristy is the oldest construction in the square and it dates back to the end of the 13th century. Sightseeing Sightseeing
