Ocean Currents What Are Currents? Current: a large stream of moving water that flows through the oceans. Currents carry water over very long distances.
Ocean Currents.
Atmospheric movements We learned that energy is transferred from the Sun to the Earth creating convection currents. But, what type of currents???
Warm air near the Earth’s surface rises and then cools as it goes back up. Convection happens on a global scale in the atmosphere and causes global winds,
Global Wind Patterns. What is Wind? Wind is the movement of air from an area of higher pressure to an area of lower pressure. Warmer air expands, becoming.

What forces cause the ocean to move? Gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun Wind (friction between air and water) Coriolis Effect (spin of Earth) Differences.
Question of the Day Question: If you heat up a liquid, like water in a fish tank, can it hold more oxygen or less? How do you know? Answer: ……… Turn In:
Ocean Currents p. 36 Ocean waters are constantly on the move. How they move influences climate and living conditions for plants and animals, even on land.
Ocean Current s.  Warm currents flow away from the equator.  Cold currents flow toward the equator. Ocean Currents.
Oceans Surface Currents. What are surface currents? Surface currents are horizontal, streamline movements of water that occur at or near the surface of.
An ocean current can be defined as any continuous flow of water along a definite path in the ocean. Ocean currents of the earth.

Ocean Currents

Two Types of Currents Density Driven (deep water) Currents Wind Driven (surface) Currents

Density Driven Currents Move water vertically through the ocean Density differences cause deep water currents Dense water sinks at the poles Less dense water rises at the equator This process creates circulation throughout the oceans of the world

Surface Currents Winds are primary energy source for surface currents. Winds blow across the ocean surface friction between the wind and the ocean surface drags the water along

Which way does the water flow? Rotation of the earth changes path of air and water (Coriolis Effect) Water flows to the right (clockwise) in Northern Hemisphere

Northern Pacific Surface Currents California Current Kuroshio Current North Equatorial Current Equator South Equatorial Current East Australian Current Peru Current West Wind Drift

Global Surface Currents Most ocean currents have a dramatic impact on local weather and continental climate patterns Ex: Mediterranean climate zones

Surface Currents in the US The California Current is cold and comes from Alaska The Gulf Stream is warm and comes from the equator/ Gulf of Mexico San Francisco Washington, DC

What is a gyre? A roughly circular pattern of ocean surface currents Caused by the Coriolis Effect

North Pacific Gyre Equator

Why are gyres/ currents important? Warm currents move heat from the equator to middle and high latitudes Gyres influence air temperature, weather and climate of every continent
