HATAYİ YANAK 0911216044 WORD PLAY

Word play or wordplay is a literary technique in which the words that are used become the main subject of the work, primarily for the purpose of intended effect or amusement. [wikipedia.org]

'My girlfriend criticised my apartment, so I knocked her flat‘ TYPES OF WORD PLAY Homographic Puns 1 Homographic puns play on the multiple meanings one word/word group may have. 'My girlfriend criticised my apartment, so I knocked her flat‘

'Seven days without laughter makes one weak' TYPES OF WORD PLAY Homophonic Puns 2 Homophonic puns play on words that sound alike, but are spelled differently, and mean different things. 'Seven days without laughter makes one weak'

HAMLET "Not so, my lord, I am too much in the sun" (1.2.67). This is Hamlet's response to the King's question, "How is it that the clouds still hang on you?" He means that the King has called Hamlet "son" once too often.

3 TYPES OF WORD PLAY Double-sound Puns Double-sound puns refer to a word sounding similar to another word, however not identical to the sound of a word, such as homographic puns. A music teacher not at home may leave a note on their door saying 'Bach in a minute'.

Mother-in-law = woman Hitler TYPES OF WORD PLAY Anagrams 4 Anagrams have always had a reputation for being difficult, but they are regarded as word play. Anagrams are words, or phrases formed by rearranging the letters of other words and phrases. Funeral = real fun Mother-in-law = woman Hitler

If corn oil comes from corn, where does baby oil come from?

If you throw a cat out a car window does it become kitty litter?

BUT!!!! Word plays are not always humorous, and sometimes not even intended to be humorous.

5 TYPES OF WORD PLAY Portmanteau Words Portmanteau words (or blends) are words that are formed by telescoping two other words in on themselves, such as bit (binary unit), brunch (breakfast/lunch) and motel (motor hotel).

6 TYPES OF WORD PLAY Oxymorons Basically, they are a working contradiction. minor miracle original copies found missing friendly fire Types are taken from www.bbc.co.uk, but i made some of those examples

THANK YOU!!!
