Combustion, rusting, oxidation, oxygen

Candle burning in bell jar

When a substance reacts with oxygen, it gains oxygen and becomes oxidised. Some oxidation are fast such as combustion. Others are slow, such as rusting.

In groups recap everything you know about oxygen: colourless gas Has no smell Slightly soluble in water.

A test for oxygen. Oxygen makes a glowing splint relight.

Reaction of acid with metals

increasing reactivity The reactivity series The reactivity series is the list of metals placed in order of their reactivity. One way to remember this order is to learn this silly sentence: potassium sodium calcium magnesium aluminium zinc iron lead copper silver gold Please send Charlie’s monkeys and zebras in lead cages securely guarded! increasing reactivity Platinum

What is the order of metals?

Metals and acid – general equation Gold is an unreactive metal that does not react with acid. Other metals, such as magnesium and zinc, react with acid producing bubbles of gas. The “squeaky pop” test shows that this gas is hydrogen. When a metal reacts with acid, the products are a metal salt and hydrogen. What is the general equation for the reaction of a metal with acid? metal acid metal salt hydrogen How does the type of acid affect the type of salt produced?

Metals and hydrochloric acid What is made when each metal reacts with hydrochloric acid? What is the balanced symbol equation for each reaction? → hydrochloric acid + magnesium magnesium chloride + hydrogen Mg + 2HCl → MgCl2 H2 → hydrochloric acid + aluminium aluminium chloride + hydrogen 2Al + 6HCl → 2AlCl3 3H2 → hydrochloric acid + zinc zinc chloride + hydrogen Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl2 H2

Metals and sulfuric acid – equations What is made when each metal reacts with sulfuric acid? What is the balanced symbol equation for each reaction? → sulfuric acid + magnesium magnesium sulfate + hydrogen Mg + H2SO4 → MgSO4 H2 → sulfuric acid + aluminium aluminium sulfate + hydrogen 2Al + 3H2SO4 → Al2(SO4)3 3H2 → sulfuric acid + zinc zinc sulfate + hydrogen Zn + H2SO4 → ZnSO4 H2

Metals and nitric acid – equations What is made when each metal reacts with nitric acid? What is the balanced symbol equation for each reaction? → nitric acid + magnesium magnesium nitrate + hydrogen Mg + 2HNO3 → Mg(NO3)2 H2 → nitric acid + aluminium aluminium nitrate + hydrogen 2Al + 6HNO3 → 2Al(NO3)3 3H2 → nitric acid + zinc zinc nitrate + hydrogen Zn + 2HNO3 → Zn(NO3)2 H2

plenary Which of the following is a laboratory test for oxygen? A light splint goes pop A glowing splint ignites A lighted splint goes out

plenary 2) Which of these four metals listed below is the least reactive Potassium Platinum Iron Cooper

3) Which general equation is correct? Acid + metal → salt + water Acid + metal → salt + hydrogen Acid + metal → salt + carbon dioxide Acid + metal → salt + oxygen

4) Which statement is true? Platinum reacts violently with hydrochloric acid Sodium reacts with water to give carbon dioxide Iron is more reactive than calcium Potassium is more reactive than lithium

Oxygen and oxidation L.O.: Explain how to use flame tests to identify the presence of a particular metal. Know how to collect oxygen produced in reactions Know a simple laboratory test for oxygen Explain what oxidation is.

Methods of collecting hydrogen In a gas syringe, over water or by upward delivery.
