Adding and Subtracting Polynomials

 SWBAT write polynomials in standard form.  SWBAT add and subtract polynomials.  Students will construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

 The degree of a monomial is the sum of the exponents of all of its variables.  The degree of a polynomial is the greatest degree of any term in the polynomial. DegreeName 0Constant 1Linear 2Quadratic 3Cubic 4Quartic 5Quintic 6 or more6 th degree, 7 th degree, and so on.

 The standard form of a polynomial has the terms in order from greatest to least degree. In this form, the coefficients of the first term is called the leading coefficient.  Write each polynomial in standard form. Identify the leading coefficient. a) 3x 2 + 4x 5 – 7x b) 5y – 9 – 2y 4 – 6y 3

a) 8 – 2x 2 + 4x 4 – 3x b) y + 5y 3 – 2y 2 – 7y

 Pg. 468 (1-9 odds)

 Find each sum: a) (2x 2 + 5x – 7) + (3 – 4x 2 + 6x) b) (3y + y 3 – 5) + (4y 2 – 4y + 2y 3 + 8)

a) (5x 2 - 3x + 4) + (6x – 3x 2 – 3) b) (y 4 -3y + 7) + (2y 3 + 2y – 2y 4 -11)

 Find each difference: a) (3 – 2x + 2x 2 ) – (4x – 5 + 3x 2 ) b) (7p + 4p 3 – 8) – (3p – 9p)

a) (4x 3 – 3x 2 + 6x – 4) – (-2x 3 + x 2 -2) b) (8y y 2 ) – (7 – y y)

 P = 7m C = 4m + 78  Write an equation for the total monthly sales T of phones and cameras.  Predict the number of phones and cameras sold in 10 months.  Guided Practice #5:

 3 Things you Learned  2 Things you Understand  1 Thing that still Confuses you. Homework: Chapter 8.1 Skills Practice in WB EXTRA PRACTICE!! Pg (21-43 odds)
