Welcome Back! Universal Design for Learning Office of Secondary Mathematics August 22, 2012
Participants will: Identify the principles of Universal Design for Learning. Share ideas on how learning experiences in any lesson could be modified to incorporate principles of Universal Design for Learning. Examine MSDE lesson seeds and discuss how principles of UDL will be used in developing lesson plans.
You are preparing a formal dinner for a large gathering of friends and family and you decide to serve pork tenderloin to everyone. Once your guests arrive, you remember that you invited several small children who might not eat pork, an uncle who keeps kosher and several vegetarians. You want to please everyone, so you hurriedly prepare some macaroni and cheese for the children, a salad for the vegetarians and something kosher for your uncle.
Now imagine the same scenario, only this time you have taken into account the differences among your guests’ eating habits ahead of time. When they arrive, they all find something that they can eat at your table.

Principles of UDL 3 Principles of UDL Multiple Means of Representation Multiple Means of Action and Expression Multiple Means of Engagement The "what" of learningThe "how" of learningThe "why" of learning Present information and content in different ways Differentiate the ways that students can express what they know Stimulate interest and motivation for learning Principles of UDL
UDL and the Learning Brain o Recognition: the “what” of learning Multiple means of representation o Strategic: the “how” of learning Multiple means of action and expression o Affective: the “why” of learning Multiple means of engagement
Principle I: Multiple Means of Representation Access to content. Provide information in a variety of formats. Adjust the content based on the needs of the students. Access to learning for students with a variety of backgrounds. Recognition: the “what” of learning Multiple means of representation
Principle II: Multiple Means of Action and Expression Reduce barriers in learning. Provide options for students to show what they know. Provide flexibility in ways information is presented. Provide flexibility in how students are engaged. o Strategic: the “how” of learning Multiple means of action and expression
Principle III: Multiple Means of Engagement Access to content via student engagement Explore how student affect can inform teaching practice Encourage learners to regulate and take control o Affective: the “why” of learning Multiple means of engagement

Why UDL? Why Now? Common Core UDL
Common Core The standards provide a clear and rigorous set of learning targets aimed toward what students must learn. The CC standards are designed to help students to develop deep understanding of topics with connections to authentic, real world scenarios. The standards aim to engage students in building knowledge and skills needed for success in college and careers.
UDL is a research-based framework addressing learner diversity. UDL principles address how we teach, how students engage in learning, and how we measure what students learn. UDL allows for flexibility in all aspects of instruction.
The Common Core and Universal Design for Learning work together! In teaching the Common Core Standards, educators should provide multiple ways to access resources and content so learners are given the opportunity to take charge of their own learning. Common Core UDL
