Introduction Adding and Subtracting Comparing and Ordering Number Line Converting into Fractions

Decimals are an equivalent to fractions. They are, however, also different from fractions. Decimals are in the tenths, hundredths, thousandths, etc. The decimal point is a period that separates the whole numbers from the decimals. You say, ‘And’ to read the decimal point. As an example; 4 and 8 tenths (4.8).

Adding and Subtracting decimals is like adding whole numbers and money. Add and subtract decimals the same way you would with whole numbers, but Always,Always line up the decimal point. Examples:

Ordering and Comparing decimals is easy. There are multiple ways to order and compare decimals; one is to use flats rods and units. Another way is to use place value from left to right. If there are whole numbers, compare those first. If there are no whole numbers, or they are equal, then compare as normal. Also, in decimals, tenths are the largest.

 Decimals on a number line is just placing the decimal on the number line for the correct place value.  Sometimes you need to guess the numbers between points based on the labeled sections. For example placing on the line below.

To convert into a fraction lets say your decimal is 0.79 hundredths, you make one hundred as your denominator and 79 as your numerator
